English Language Learners (ELL)

ICSV offers an English Language Learners Program (ELL) in order to assist non-native English speaking students in raising their level of academic proficiency in English. The classroom and ELL teachers are the primary educators. Support is available by means of English language teachers, consultation, and evaluation.

Each student’s English language proficiency level is assessed using testing results, work samples, and prior records. This information, together with input from the Principal, ELL teachers, and classroom teachers, is used to determine whether the student’s English abilities are at the Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced level.

Elementary School:

  • Beginner ELL – Student has little or no English language skills and is in ELL in place of his/her German class. In addition, the student receives additional pull-out services.  Pass/Fail grades are given for Beginner level students in most classes.
  • Intermediate ELL – Student is able to understand basic instructions and complete assignments. Student is in ELL classes in place of his/her German class.  Pass/Fail or letter grades may be awarded to these students.
  • Advanced ELL – Student is still in ELL in order to continue strengthening his/her academic proficiency in English, but is becoming increasingly independent.  Student is in ELL classes in place of his/her German class.  Letter grades are awarded for all classes.
